ABOUT THE SITE --->
This is a meeting place for people who love animals and want to stop the persecution and exploitment of them. Many animals are taken from the wild and forced to perform for circuses, commercials or some people want them as pets. (Haven't you seen those commercials with chimps in them? Don't they just make you sick?) Poachers kill many wild animals to make money in the black market or sell the body parts as souvenirs in poor countries. Especially with the great apes and tigers, which have caused their numbers to decline dramatically. Also, a new trend (unfortunately) is the bush-meat trade. This is the hunting of wild animals (mainly primates) and selling their meat as delicacies to other countries. This abuse needs to stop so our fellow creatures can live peacefully in the wild, where they belong. If you support this cause, then please join to show everyone you care about wild animals
and that they should stay wild. Visit the members page to meet other people who care about animals just like you! For more direct involvement, visit the links to various organizations.
ABOUT ME --->
Artemis is a zoology major dedicated to saving animals and spreading the word about animal persecution so it can stop. She wants to study animal behavior in the wild, mainly primates but she loves all animals. She also wants to teach natives ways they can live peacefully with animals instead of making money off the bush-meat trade or black market.
WHAT YOU CAN DO --->
- PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT
- number one DON'T LITTER!!! Reuse, reduce, and recycle. Try buying stuff that doesn't have alot of packaging or individually wrapped products. Also buy products that contain recycled material and vegetable-based ink (it should be listed).
- plant a tree! Trees not only add beauty to your area, but also provide shade, erosion-protection, habitat for animals, protection from winds, etc.
- if you can manage donating money, try supporting nature groups such as the Sierra club or Nature Conservancy
- don't be wasteful! Use rags instead of paper towels. Landfills are taking over our land!
- don't buy furniture that was made from tropical woods such as apitong, banak, bocote, bubinga, cocobolo, cordia, ebony, goncalo avles, greenheart, iroko, jelutang, koa, lauan, mahogany, meranti, padauk, purpleheart, ramin, rosewood, satinwood, teak, virola, wenge, or zebrawood.
- buy rainforest products that are taken without destroying it, like nuts, fruits, soaps and lotions, and even certain medicines. This encourages companies to stop the destruction of rainforests if they see there is a motive (making $) in saving it.
- write to your elected officials about land conservation issues
- HELPING ANIMALS
- report animal abuse to your local SPCA
- DON'T buy dogs from pet stores! These dogs come from puppy mills where they are overly bred and live in terrible conditions. Buying them supports these mills. Get all your pets from animal shelters. For more info on the horror that is puppy mills, go here »
- Don't buy exotic pets, keep them in the wild!
- Circuses are slavery! Yes, please don't support circuses (unless they don't use animal entertainment like Cirque du Soleil) because they overwork animals and make them perform activities that is not natural for their behavior.
- cut the 6-ring plastic holders from soda cans incase they end up in the sea. Some species of birds, otters, dolphins, and other water animals become tangled and die.
- be careful of the souvenirs you buy. Don't buy things made out of coral, ivory, or animal parts.
- support national refuges and parks
- DON'T buy products that were tested on animals. Look at the packaging! If it doesn't say, then it probably was tested on animals. For a list of non-animal tested products, go here »
- write to your elected officials about animal issues
- donate money by "adopting" endangered species. Visit the Smithsonian or the Gorilla Fund to learn how.
