Concerning Pipeweed
Pipeweed is an important aspect of the hobbit culture and is commonly seen in the story.
It is a leisure activity practiced by adult hobbits, humans, wizards, and even dwarves. However, Elves seem to not partake in the smoking of hobbit leaf.
The custom of smoking pipeweed is very old throughout Hobbiton. The region of Southfarthing is famous for its high quality hobbit leaf. According to Merry Brandybuck in his book Herblore of the Shire, pipeweed is "the one art that we can certainly claim to be our own invention."
