FACTS: Lives in Georgia with his wife Karen and two daughters. Attended Georgia Tech where he was teammates with Jay Payton and Nomar Garciaparra. Was a 3-time All-American and was named Baseball America's College Player of the Year in 1993. His No. 33 is the only jersey retired in Georgia Tech history and he continues to hold most Georgia Tech offensive records. Varitek was drafted by the Twins in the first round (21st overall) in 1993, but opted to return to school. He also was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic baseball team that played in the Barcelona games. He is a 1990 graduate of Lake Brantley High School in Longwood, FL, where he was primarily a third baseman.
